In Matthew 19:16, Jesus was asked what must be done to inherit eternal life. His answer: “If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments”. Then Jesus described several of his commandments listed in Exodus 20:2-17. (Matthew 19:17).
You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make idols.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.
Jesus tells us that he did not come to destroy the Law but to fulfill the law. (Matthew 5:17). Obedience to God begins with accepting the Ten Commandments as the permanent standard for our values and behavior.
Each of the Ten Commandments reveals the attitudes and actions that show us how to love God and our neighbor. This is why the apostle John tells us that “whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him” and “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments” (1 John 2:5; 1 John 5:2).
