|Are you a member of the family? Being a real family member is more than sharing the same name or living in the same house. Families are dynamic organizations that have responsibilities to the other members.
A family member should be a participant in the activities, gatherings, celebrations, and responsibilities of the family. A family member contributes to the needs of other family members and the maintenance of the home.
Family members must not be destructive and divisive. Rather, they must be edifying and supportive. Being a real family member means working and being proactive in building up the family. A family member works to enhance and strengthen their relationships with other family members.
How are these principles applicable to the family of God?
Romans 8: 14 – 16
14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
Clearly God has said that those who have received his Spirit are members of his family. As family members we have responsibilities to God and to each other. We can no longer serve ourselves and our own fleshly attitudes and desires. Our fleshly needs and wants are secondary to the needs of the spiritual family.
Galatians 6: 7 – 10
7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
